Week 6 Storytelling: West African Folktales

It was a normal day for Karen on the morning of June 12, 2015. She woke up, took the dogs out for a walk, and was getting her day started. As the day progressed on, the weather became worse and worse. The wind was blowing and the sky was starting to turn different colors. She had seen this before since living in Oklahoma; a tornado was possible. Karen stayed by the television and listened to updates from the weather newscasts. As the weather became worse, she got ready for the worst. At around four in the afternoon, a tornado had formed south of where she lived. With southern winds, the tornado made its way further north and straight for Karen's town. With the sound of the wind blowing, the tornado siren blaring, and the dogs barking, Karen and her dogs made way to their bunker. What came next was a lot of banging, scratching, and crashing outside of her bunker down that continued to rattle. Moments later when everything was silent and still, Karen opened her door with much struggle. She opened her door to see ruin. Her house was no where to be found, except for pieces scattered throughout her street.

Instead of breaking down, she immediately ran from house to house to check on neighbors and friends. For hours she relentlessly made sure that everyone else was okay before she even worried about herself. She was accompanied by local volunteers to help pick up the trash and give warmth to those who lost their homes. One of the volunteers, Jack, noticed her generosity and wanted to make sure she was taken care of as well. Jack, not being able to do much, called his buddy, Ron, who owned a department store to fetch Karen some blankets for the night. When Ron came to visit Karen, he himself realized that she deserved more. Ron called his wife's friend, Lorena, who owned a restaurant nearby, and asked if she could make a good care package for Karen. After hearing of Karen's generosity and making a care package, Lorena called up her friend, Harold, who worked at the news station to see if he could help out in any way. Harold, being impressed by Karen, convinced the news team to cover a story of Karen and her selfless deeds for the community during this tragedy. The news team did a cover story on Karen and put it live on the television. 

After Karen's story being aired, for days more and more people came to care for Karen and her work. The video of Karen's story became one of the most played videos of the week, which grabbed more attention. Karen was trending on Facebook and Twitter and made it far enough to the studios. One day, Sofia, who works on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, saw Karen's story and knew that Ellen would want to help. Ellen watched the video and immediately asked to bring Karen to the show. Three days later, Karen was on live television telling her story yet again, but to Ellen and the rest of the nation. Ellen was so moved by Karen's generosity and love for helping others, that she gave her $20,000 to help start up a new home. Since, Ellen knew that Karen would probably use the money to help her community, she also gave the gift of another $30,000 to the community and the people who helped clean it up.

Karen did not mean for any of this to happen. She did what she knew was right and hoped that people would benefit from her help. It took one person to notice her generosity to get her to this point in life. The world is incredibly connected and word travels fast. Good things happen to good people, and the world likes to see it happen.

Author's Note: This week I decided to read the West African Folktales Unit. One of the stories in this unit is called How Mushrooms First Grew. This is the story that I decided to base my story after. In the original story, it was about these two brothers who are trying to make a living but are having very bad luck. A bird noticed their bad luck and wanted to help but ended up with bad luck itself. The silk tree felt bad for the bird and an elephant feeling bad for the silk tree. It continues with a hunter feeling bad for the elephant then a tree stump feeling bad for the hunter. Finally the white ants feel bad for the tree stump but are wise and grow mushrooms for everyone to feed from. It is a waterfall story that leads to good. In my story I wanted a main character who went through a tragedy and made it positive. I wanted to have people notice her positivity and eventually become an event where they can give back to her. I love the Ellen show because she tends to notice the people who don't mean to be noticed. She brings awareness to people of individuals who sacrifice their own time to do something for someone else more in need than themselves.

Week 6 Reading Diary: West African Folktales

This week I decided to read the West African Folktales Unit! This is from the West African Folktales by William H. Barker and Cecilia Sinclair.

The Moon and Stars - When you help friends and put yourself in danger for them, they will trust you with the world. This is how he became the sun, his father the moon, and his friends the stars.

How the Tortoise Got His Shell - When life gets crazy and you can sometimes take it too far, you are left with a burden for the rest of your life. In this story, the burden is the shell on his back.

The Hunter and the Tortoise - This man loved this tortoise's song so much that he wanted it for himself. He then wanted to show off his singer, which led him to death. He wanted too much and was punished for it.

The Leopard and the Ram - The leopards were very curious of the rams and how they lived their lives. The day that the rams discovered that the leopards were spying, the leopards ran into the forest and never came back out. This is why they live in the jungle and the rams live at home in the open.

King Chameleon and the Animals - The chameleon tricked the other animals and held on to the hare. He disguised himself and sat down on the stump before anyone else. All the animals didn't accept him as king and he climbed up to the tallest tree in embarrassment.

Elephant and Wren - The spider was being selfish and wanted to save all the food to himself. He tied up the elephant to go catch a small wren instead. Both had escaped and he had nothing to bring back to his family.

The Ungrateful Man - The hunter saved all in the pit. The animals were very thankful for him and gave him gifts. The man became jealous of the man and framed him. The hunter ended up using the animal's gifts to save the prince with help from the ungrateful man's blood. The hunter was then rewarded for being trustworthy.

Why Tigers Never Attack Unless They are Provoked - The tiger was abused by his friend's friend. The friend told the tiger to never trust a man that puts him into harm.

How Mushrooms First Grew - This story is a waterfall story. One thing affects the next thing and so on. Mushrooms were created because men were trying to make money and things kept on going wrong. The white ants were the ones who officially paid their debt.

Farmer Mybrow and the Fairies - The wife did not keep her promise and caused a great mistake for her husband and their crops. They ended up suffering from her forgetfulness.

Week 6 Reading Diary: West African Folktales

This week I decided to read the West African Folktales Unit! This is from the West African Folktales by William H. Barker and Cecilia Sinclair.

How We Got The Name "Spider Tales" - This story is about a spider who wants all the stories to be named after him. In order for that to happen he is wise and smart and fulfills all of the chief's wishes. He tricks the bees to get inside the jar, the stick to wrap around a stick, and the tiger to be caught. All of the stories are named after this spider for his cunning creativity.

How Wisdom Became the Property of the Human Race - There was once a man who had all the wisdom in the world. He tried to hide it from the world when his son was wise enough to outsmart him. The father threw the pot down on the ground, which broke and then spread throughout the world. Now everyone has some wisdom.

Anansi and Nothing - There were two men, Anansi and Nothing. Anansi was poor and Nothing was rich. They both went to the next town to find wives. Anansi pretended to be rich and Nothing seemed to be poor. The wives they chose were both confused when they saw the truth. Anansi was so mad that Nothing had everything that he planned to kill him. After killing Nothing, Nothing's wife brought out stew to all the children in the town to help her mourn her husband. This is why when a kid cries and people saying that he or she is 'crying for nothing'.

Thunder and Anansi - A starving man went to a near island to find food for his starving family. After not having any luck he found the god Thunder. Thunder heard his tale and gave him a magic pot that would bring everlasting food. He was selfish and hid the pot to himself. His son found it one day and his family tried to get back at him and feed the whole village. The pot melted and Anansi was very upset. He tried to go back to Thunder, but after this he gave Anansi a stick that beat him instead. Anansi learned his lesson.

Tit for Tat - Anansi's son found where all the animals lived. Anansi was jealous that his son was becoming rich off meat. He tricked Anansi and was able to follow him to his spot. Anansi's son got back at him by pretending to be the gods and making Anansi give up all the meat. 

Why White Ants Always Harm Man's Property - The leopard, the tiger, and the spider were all tricking each other. In the end, the spider ended up tricking the leopard and the tiger the most making the family of white ants mad. This is why the ants are the ultimate pests of mankind. 

The Squirrel and the Spider - A squirrel had harvested a whole field. The spider and his family tricked the squirrel and took all the harvest. In the end a crow took all the harvest and the spider family gained nothing from thieving. 

Ants and Their Bundles - Anansi killed the king's dwarf and the king was so mad he made him carry a load. The ant was a nice fellow and held the box until Anansi would come back. He never came back and the ant was left to carry twice his weight for the rest of his life. 

Why Spiders are Always Found in Corners of Ceilings - A farmer was selfish and was going to steal all of his harvest for himself and not his family. The son saw that some of the harvest was gone and had the town come and help try to find the thief. The father got stuck in the trap and changed into a spider so they would not know that it was him. That is why spiders are generally in the corners. 

The Grinding-Stone - The spider tried to steal the stone that was providing his cousin with food. He tried to carry it and got stuck under it. This is why we often find spiders underneath rocks.

Thoughts About Comments

When looking back over the comments that people have left me over the past couple of weeks, I have noticed that everyone is so helpful. I noticed a pattern with the stories that involved me changing the characters in my stories from animals to humans was greatly liked by all. I think they agree with me that writing a story about people is very relatable and can be applied to each of our lives more easily. I also noticed that on the comments on my introduction are so welcoming and nice. For those who really paid attention to my introduction and mentioned main points, I was very thankful for their encouragement. I read comments as they come in but it is nice to go back and look at all of them! There are way more now I am noticing than when they first starting coming in! I also think that I have been doing a good job with my comments. I like for the writer to know that I spent the time to read their story or blog.

Week 5 Storytelling: Who Would You Choose?

"You look beautiful!" I said to my good friend, Hannah, on the day of her wedding. Here I, Emma, was again at another friend's wedding with no prospect in sight. I always have to bring Tony, my longtime best friend, to all of these weddings because I can never find someone to bring myself since I am hopelessly single. It's the same thing every time; I do the motions of being in the wedding like being in the bridal party, meet up with him afterwards since he can't be a part of that, and then get drunk together at the reception to forget how we are both ridiculously single. For those of you wondering, no, this is not the point of the story where you all go,"Oh, it's because y'all are meant for each other!" This is definitely not the case, I promise.

In the tradition of drinking and dancing too much at weddings, I run into this good-looking man named Samuel. Supposedly, he is one of the groom's friends from college and we dance and talk for quite a while at the reception. We talk over the next couple of days, get along pretty well, and he's going to take me out to dinner sometime next week, which I'm actually pretty nervous about! 

To make life even more hilarious, I was antique shopping today looking for a set of shelves for my bedroom when I bumped into this very attractive man that was looking for a new desk for his apartment. I learned his name was Greg and he helped me look for shelves while I helped him look for a desk. We went to lunch afterwards and talked for hours. It was an instant connection and I would very much like to see him again as well.

How is it that a week ago I had no prospects and today I have two? I'm just going to see where each relationship goes over the next week or so. For months, I was talking to both Samuel and Greg, meeting up with them for dinners, and becoming more and more confused about who I wanted to keep around. 

During this time is also when I realized that I was becoming more tired and losing my appetite. In the beginning I thought it was because I was stressing out too much and worrying about who I was going to choose, but Tony actually made me go to the doctor and I'm thankful that he did. It turns out I have leukemia. When I got back I immediately told both Samuel and Greg of one, my condition, and two, of each other. 

What I really don't deserve is for both of them to continue to care for me and want to fight to be with me. They both had fallen for me and wanted to be with me forever. They are both fantastic, wonderful, and the most amazing men in the world and how could they both want me? So here I am, stuck in this hospital for months trying to get better.

Samuel will drop by the hospital to visit me pretty often. He is the best and has made it his responsibility and his goal to spread awareness of my disease. He started an organization to raise money for leukemia. He spends all of his time and efforts being charitable and reaching out to people all over the city. I am so thankful to have someone that cares so much for me that he is doing everything he can to save others like me. I really do love him!

Greg also visits me quite often, but he is also a busy businessman. I asked my doctor about the medical bills today to see when they were due. He looked at me with a smile and said to me that they were already taken care of and I didn't need to worry about it. Turns out that Greg has been paying my medical bills this entire time! I am truly so thankful for him and can't imagine my life without him. I love him and all that he has done for me!

My best friend from the beginning, Tony, actually, has been the one to stay by my side throughout this whole sickness. He was the one who sent me to the doctor, sat with me in my appointment, and really hasn't left my side ever since. He leaves when he needs to but comes back as soon as possible. We often fall asleep watching movies together every night and I now realize how much he means to me. He makes me laugh and feel better when the doctor comes in with bad news, he lets me cry on his shoulder, and he is the one that understands the pain I have been going through all this time. As I look at him now sleeping in the chair next to my hospital bed, I realize that I have loved him this entire time without knowing it. I think he has realized it too because normally he would go do his own thing by now. Sometimes the hardest times in life make you think about if you have a future, what you will do with it. 

So, if the doctor comes in and tells me that I am cured and I have the rest of my life to live, who do I spend it with? Do I spend it with my long time best friend who I have been with through thick and thin? Do I spend it with the gentleman who loves me enough to change his life and spend it raising awareness about my disease? Or do I spend it with the man who took responsibility for me out of love and has made it his goal to make sure that I have a life full of life without debt?

Author's Note: This story is inspired by the riddle of The Three Lovers in the Twenty-Two Goblins Unit. In the original story, a goblin riddles a king with a story about a beautiful girl that is being pursued by three suitors. The girl ends up dying and being cremated. The first suitor lives on her ashes and becomes a beggar just to be with her ashes. The second suitor takes her bones and dips them into the sacred Ganges River. The third suitor becomes a monk and wanders until he finds a spell book that would bring her back to life. He returns and brings the girl back to life in her full beauty. The goblin then asks the king who the girl should pick as her husband. The king, being a wise man, tells him that the first suitor who stayed with her ashes should be the one to have her for he acted as a husband would, when the other two acted as if a father or a brother would. The king guesses right and the rest of the unit continues. In my story, I decided to make it more modern with a confusing love story. Tony represents the first suitor, Samuel represents the second suitor, and Greg represents the third suitor. In the end, though, I decided to leave it as an open question for you to answer yourself, who you would choose. I also chose to write it in a way where we are in Emma's mind as the couple of months paths so we can see her own heart change in the process.

Week 5 Reading Diary continued: Twenty-Two Goblins

This week I decided to read theTwenty-Two Goblins Unit by Arthur W. Ryder. I thought it was interesting to read about a bunch of riddles and to see if the King would get them all right! 

The Snake's Poison - A man died from accidentally consuming snake's poison in his food. He tried to blame all others for his death, but in reality he was the one who accidentally killed himself. The others did not know what was happening or were just trying to be charitable. 

The Girl and the Thief - A girl fell in love with a man who was being put to the stake. He both wept and laughed when seeing his fate. He was brought back to life to fulfill the rest of his life and marry the merchant's daughter.

The General's Wife - A beautiful woman had married a general and the King had fallen in love with her. The husband offered his wife to the king but the king refused saying that that was against his virtue. The king is the hero in this story because he deprived himself of having everything that many kings wouldn't have done in his place.

The Four Brothers - These four brothers all learned different skills. The first three were making the lion but not realizing what they were making. The fourth brother is the one who realized what animal it was and brought it to life. The fourth brother is the reason why they all died. 

The Old Hermit - The hermit saw that a young boy had died and he decided to take over his body and continue his life. He was sad to leave his old body but excited for the future. 

Father and Son, Daughter and Mother - The riddle of where the son married the mother and the father married the daughter was finally the riddle that stumped the King. He could not answer. Because of him being able to answer so many riddles and take up so much time, the goblin them saved his life by telling him of the monk's plans. Without the goblin, the King might have been hurt. 

Conclusion - He did as the goblin had told him and killed the monk. The goblin and everyone else was happy and the king told him that he wanted all of these stories to be heard. The king was now the god of fairies.

Week 5 Reading Diary: Twenty-Two Goblins

This week I decided to read theTwenty-Two Goblins Unit by Arthur W. Ryder. I thought it was interesting to read about a bunch of riddles and to see if the King would get them all right! 

Introduction - A monk had been giving the King fruit for many years as an offering. One day the King realized that gems were inside all of these fruits and asked the monk why he was so generous. The monk needed the King's help and here starts our story. When taking the body down from the tree like the monk had asked, a goblin is what the King had to bring back to the monk. The King is very wise and answers all of the riddles correctly

The Three Lovers - Three brothers all were in love with the same girl. When the girl unexpectedly died, the three brothers dealt with it in different ways. The first boy laid on her ashes and was with her always, living a beggar life. The second brother dipped her bones in the sacred river. And lastly, the third brother became a monk and found a spell that could bring her back to life. After bringing the girl back to life they all fought over her again. The King knew that the first brother was the one who deserved her love since he was the one who acted like a husband would.

Brave, Wise, Clever - A girl had said that she would only marry a wise man, a clever man, or a brave man. When she was kidnapped by a giant, they all helped save her. In the end she should end up with the brave man because he is the one who physically saved her, the others just helped.

The Girl, Her Husband, and Her Brother - This girl had married this man and she and her husband went and visited the house of a goddess with her brother. The husband had sacrificed himself to the goddess by cutting off his head. When the brother went inside, he himself also sacrificed himself. The girl prayed to the goddess and was allowed for both of them to come back to life. She accidentally switched the heads. She should stay with the one with her husband's head because that is the most important part of the body.

Food, Women, Cotton - Three men were trying to get out of removing a turtle from their father. The first brother impressed the king by saying that the food tasted like ashes. The second brother said that the woman spelled of goat milk. The third brother had the scar of a hair in the couch cushions. The man of cotton was the most clever because the other two could have researched before talking to the King.

The Four Scientific Suitors - The girl said she would marry the man of science. Out of all of them she should choose the warrior who does true science.

The Three Delicate Wives - This man had three wives and all of them were hurt. The first was hurt by a lotus flower, the second was burned by moon beams, and the third was bruised by just the sound. The third is the most delicate because she didn't even touch anything and she was hurt.

Week 4 Growth Mindset: Sharing With Others

This week I was talking about this class to some of my friends. After describing the class and talking about what I do for the class, they were very intrigued. I got out my computer and let them read my blog posts and some of the other really great ones I have read. After that I let them look at the online UnTextbook and they enjoyed browsing through a bunch of the units. We talked about a few fables and fairy tales that we all enjoy and talked about where they might have originated from. It was a great way to include my friends into what I am learning in class. I shared with them my class and they shared their favorite stories with me! Who knows, they might even take this class next semester!

Week 4 Storytelling: Jataka Tales

In early July, Harriet moved to Fredericksburg, TX to start a new life. She had been living in Dallas for the majority of her life and needed a change. She was in an abuse relationship with this guy named Russell and she finally got away. Starting a new life in a new town seemed like the best route for her and she saw hope in the distance.

Harriet moved into this quaint, yellow house just a few blocks off from town. She settled in and after a few weeks of being by herself she thought she'd probably like to get to know the town. After walking along the streets she stopped into a convenient store to buy some necessities. The convenient storeowner, Jan, struck up a conversation with Harriet and thus started a new friendship. Jan was an older lady who still had all the energy in the world for new friends. 

Jan recommended to Harriet that she introduce herself to her neighbors and hit the town that night to meet some of the other locals. Harriet did just that and met both of her neighbors when she went home. To the right lived a man and his wife of 20 years who had a dog named Chip and a cat named Rex. On the other side was a widow who had a son off at college. It was nice for Harriet to have people that she could come to if she needed anything. 

That night, Harriet went out to the local bar in town and met a few of the locals. They were all nice and welcoming but it would still take a while for her to warm up to them. On the way out she ran into the police officer that was stationed on the corner for the night. They struck up a conversation since he knew she wasn't from around there and by the end he ensured her that if she ever needed help he would gladly assist. 

Weeks went on and the relationships she had formed with these few locals grew deeper and deeper. She opened up about her past and as to why she had moved away. She felt safe there in Fredericksburg and saw a future there.

One day when working the convenient store, Jan saw a man walk through the door and came straight up to her counter. He had a picture of Harriet and asked if she had seen her before. Jan, knowing Harriet's past figured this was the abuse ex-boyfriend and steered him in the wrong direction saying she had never seen her before. When Russell left discouraged, Jan called Harriet and warned her. For other locals in the community that did not know of her past, Russell was led directions to where Harriet lived. Harriet had already been able to let her neighbors know of the situation and was happy to hear that they would help keep her safe. 

Harriet sat in her neighbor's house petting Chip when she saw Russell walk up to her house next door. She sat and watched him become frustrated and upset. He started shouting and becoming very distressed. He broke down the front door in full rage and she saw him searching through the house. At this point in time she called her friend that was a police officer and waited until he arrived. The police officer showed up moments later and caught Russell in Harriet's house. Since Russell was trespassing on private property he was taken away.

Harriet learned that day that friends were very important to have and she knew that she was safe with their help. In the end, Russell stayed in jail after many accusations against him were presented. Harriet was now safe and continued to live her life in Fredericksburg with her newfound loyal friends.

Author's Note: This story is based on the Jataka Tale of The Hawks and Their Friends. In this tale, hunters are wanting to eat the hawk's babies and the hawk gets help from his friends the Kingfisher, the Turtle, and the Lion. I made Jan the Kingfisher, her neighbors the Turtle, and the police officer the Lion. They all help her stay safe from danger just like the animals helped the hawks in their time of need.

Week 4 Reading Diary continued: Jataka Tales

I chose to read the Jataka Tales Unit and I enjoyed it quite a lot! Story source: Jataka Tales by Ellen C. Babbitt, illustrated by Ellsworth Young (1912). I love hearing all these famous tales that have influence on stories today

The Golden Goose - In this story there was a goose who wanted to help out this mother in need. He was being very generous and the mother was grateful. The mother, however, became very greedy and wanted all of his feathers. Taking too much advantage on a nice gesture will only leave someone into poverty and loneliness yet again. 

The Stupid Monkeys - The gardner should have taken responsibility for his job and not placed it into the monkeys hands The monkeys were only trying to help, but didn't have enough information and guidance to perform the job well. We must take the time to educate others. 

The Cunning Wolf - This story shows how important it is to pay attention to your surroundings or someone might outsmart you. The wolf was able to get away by thinking ahead and noticing that something wasn't right. 

The Woodpecker and the Lion - The woodpecker did a nice thing for the lion and was upset that the lion never said thank you. When asking the lion about it later, the lion said that keeping his mouth open was the thank you itself. Sometimes the thank yous in life are silent and only noticeable if we take the time to pay attention. 

The Otters and the Wolf - The wolf helped the otters in their dispute but took advantage of them for it. The otters were so busy with fighting that they let the wolf leave with the best part of the fish. 

How the Monkey Saved His Troop - When the king and his troops were taking all of the monkey troop's mangos, the monkeys were upset. When the king ordered for them to be shot, the monkey king strained his own body and saved his entire troop. The king noticed the monkey king's courageousness and decided that they will leave the monkeys in peace. 

The Hawks and Their Friends - It is nice to have friends who will look after you in your time of need. Having good friends is even better because they will put themselves in harms way to help you out. The kingfisher, the turtle, and the lion all cared for the hawks and kept them safe in a time of danger. 

The Foolhardy Wolf - The wolf learned from the lion and wanted to be like the lion. When the wolf of tired being the sidekick, he let his ego take control which led to his death. 

The Stolen Plow - These two men were taking advantage of each other and lying to each other. When the truth finally came out, everything was right again. It is a story of a small revenge. 

The Lion in Bad Company - This story is about peer pressure and having a bad influence in a person's life. The Wolf was a bad influence on the young lion, and after so many bad decisions, it was too late. The lion died alone while the wolf left him in his misery. 

The Wise Goat and the Wolf - A person who is fooled by tricks easily will find herself in trouble, but a person who is wise and takes caution will end up okay. This goat outsmarted the wolves twice to where the wolves gave up and never tried again. 

Beauty and the Brownie - Beauty was smart and listened to her father's instructions very carefully. This is why her herd came back with no one hurt. Brownie, however, did not pay attention to her father and lost many. Bad things can happen when we don't pay attention and do what is best for our families. 

The Elephant and the Dog - This is a story of true friendship and how hard life is when that friend is gone. When someone knows us so well and is taken away, we fall into depression.

I chose to read the Jataka Tales Unit and I enjoyed it quite a lot! Story source: Jataka Tales by Ellen C. Babbitt, illustrated by Ellsworth Young (1912). I love hearing all these famous tales that have influence on stories today.

The Monkey and the Crocodile - The crocodile is not the brightest and tried to trick the monkey into getting into the water with him. The monkey outwits the crocodile by saying that his heart was left back in the tree. The crocodile again tried to trick the monkey into falling into a trap, but the monkey was smart yet again and jumped over the crocodile to get back to safety. After this the crocodile finally decided to leave the monkey alone. I thought this story was pretty comical and shows the innocence of the young crocodile.

How the Turtle Saved His Own Life - I think it is comical how these people could be so afraid of a turtle. By using his wits, he persuaded the men to throw him into the lake where he is most save in order to "kill him". He is one smart turtle.

The Turtle Who Couldn't Stop Talking - After being told not to talk during the flight and promising the geese, the turtle still talked. This broken promise of his is what led to his death. This shows that there are consequences for broken promises.

The Ox Who Won the Forfeit - When the man was mean and beating his ox the ox did not respond well and was hurt by his owner's actions. Better outcomes happen when people are kind to each other and live life full of peace and love.

The Quarrel of the Quails - When people work together the outcome is great! But when we start only looking after ourselves we can find ourselves in trouble. This story reminded me of the scene in Finding Nemo when the fish swam down in the next to escape.

The Foolish, Timid Rabbit - This is the same as the story about how the sky is falling. One person overreacts to something or is dramatic about an event it can affect all other people as well. This also shows how gullible everyone can be when new information comes about.

The Banyan Deer - This story shows the courage of the King of the Banyan Deer and how being courageous can save yourself and others. This can be seen in many movies like Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and even in real life like the story of St. Maximilian Kolbe.

The Princes and the Water-Sprite - This story shows that being wise can save many lives. He is kind hearted and cares deeply for his brothers, which in fact bring them back from the water-sprite.

The King's White Elephant - Helping others is very important and leads to great things in life. In this story the elephant became friends with the carpenters and later led his son to be helpful as well. Because of how nice the elephant was he was able to live out the rest of the days with his nice king that looked after him. Being helpful and caring for others can lead to great things.

The Ox Who Envied the Pig - Lavishing oneself with all the selfish things in life does not last long and will lead to an early death. The people who live life normally and give thanks for what they have will live a longer life full of content.

The Crab and the Crane - The crane was very clever in the beginning by tricking the fish into hopping into his mouth. But in the end after getting away with so much, the liar finally found his match and his punishment for lying for so long and hurting so many.

The Girl Monkey and the String of Pearls - The monkey had something great and would've been able to keep it if she wasn't jealous in having everyone talk her down. She wanted to show that she was better than everyone else and ended up having her gift be taken away because of it.

The Three Fishes - Everyone should think before they act, because if not we can get into a lot of trouble that we never want to be in.

The Tricky Wolf and the Rats - Liars can always be caught if we are brave enough and smart enough to question them. We must be courageous in order to save our lives and not let the liars bring us down.

Week 3 Famous Last Words

This week I loved reading the reading units. I really enjoyed reading about the saints and I didn't really want to stop. I also think I wrote a little bit better this week. I tried using dialogue and I think came up with a clever idea of trying to get my story across. I definitely need improvement but this is definitely a start. I also wrote papers in some of my other classes, but I never have to be as imaginative as this class. I need to become focused though, I feel like I have been slacking these last couple of weeks and that usually isn't my style! I need to get back into a groove like I usually am! I also have learned a lot by reading others storytelling. They are helping me think of new ways to tell stories and present them in a whole new style. This weekend I took some time just to relax and breathe some fresh air. I went on a road trip with some friends and really thought about what I want to do with the free time in my life. We went hiking at Alabaster Caverns and walked in a field full of windmills. It was really crazy to see how big they are once when you get close to them! It was mesmerizing and reminded me that I am still very small. It reminded me that I am bound for great things and I need to strive for those moments in life. I want to take advantage of each day and not waste my time! I really like this class in the fact that it is making me realize what is important in life and letting me reflect on how I am spending my time. In a way I am learning more about myself taking this class, and it is a great feeling!

Week 3 Tech Tips: Pinterest

Pinterest is such a fun website!!!! I get so many ideas from cooking to crafts to future pets to even future vacation spots! It is so interesting to see how creative people are and to see what everyone is interested in. I could spend hours on Pinterest if I wanted to! I have been using Pinterest for a while but sometimes I forget about it. It is nice to go on it every once in a while whenever I am trying to waste time!

Here is my Pinterest if anyone wants to get to know me a bit better! Warning: there is a board specifically for pets and animals since I'm obsessed! You will notice a lot of great danes, corgis, and Bernese Mountain dogs in there!

Week 3 Learning Challenges: Happiness

Alabaster Caverns

This week I decided to do the challenge of just being happy and taking advantage of the life I have. I think I have just been so stressed out lately with trying to figure out my future that I am forgetting to live in the present. To be happy this weekend I went on a road trip! Here I go again with my adventures. A couple of friends and I drove out to Alabaster Caverns and enjoyed a day of hiking. It was great to get out into the fresh air and not think a whole lot about anything! On the way back we even stopped and walked in a field full of the energy windmills. I had never been so close to one in my life and man are they majestic! It was so relaxing just taking the day for myself and enjoying being happy. I'm going to try to find times of the day for just myself and take advantage of those times.

Week 3 Storytelling: Small Gesture, Big Impact

"Well, hello there, Felix! Welcome to the show! Have a seat on this old couch and it's nice to meet you!" said Jimmy Kimmel.

"It's nice to be here, Jimmy. Thanks for having me!" said Felix. 

"So tell me, Felix, how have you been since your role in your first major Hollywood film? A romantic drama film filled with friendship, deceit, and love," asked Jimmy. 

"It has been such a whirlwind actually! I didn't expect this movie to become so popular as it did and it was just a blessing being able to work with so many amazing actors that have influenced me over time," responded Felix.

"Well, you did a great job and I bet that your life has changed a bit since it came out, huh?" asked Jimmy. 

"Oh, most definitely! I can't say that I've ever been chased by paparazzi and been recognized in so many places before the movie came out," said Felix. 

"You better get used to it then, because I'm sure all the girls are just waiting for you to show your face and chase you down the street!" said Jimmy. 

"Ha ha, yeah, I was never the better looking one in high school, so it's a weird feeling for sure! They can be pretty crazy too; I never thought that I'd have to hide out in public like I have to sometimes do now," said Felix. 

"Ha! Are you telling me that you have had to hide from fangirls just on the street?" asked Jimmy.

"Oh yeah! I will never forget this one time I was just walking down the street minding my own business when I heard a couple of girls gossip with each other while passing me saying, 'Girls, that's totally him, I'm serious, my future husband,'" said Felix.

"Oh no! How did you get away from that?" asked Jimmy.

"Well, I started walking a little faster once when I heard them talking, which was good because it gave me a head start, and then I just started weaving through the crowds and trying to throw them off my track. Finally, as they were about to get closer, I turned off really fast into some store where I ran into this little girl who was there with her mother. Turns out her mom owned the store, so that's why she was there but she was the cutest little thing with a yellow dress with the frilly white socks and a red bow in her hair. She laughed at me when I was panting and asked me what I was doing. When I told her that some girls were following me, she led me to the back of the store and sat me down on the ground. She then put some boxes around me behind the counter and then sat on top of them to cover up my face. Sure enough those crazy girls came into the store in a tizzy and were searching every corner. The little girl just smiled at them and waited till they left to get down from the box to let me out. Ha ha, the mom came out from the back and was concerned as to who I was and why I was behind the counter," explained Felix.

"Yeah, she was probably thinking you were about to rob the place," joked Jimmy. 

"After leaving the counter and apologizing for using her place as a hideout, she then realized who I was and then I gave them my autograph and took a picture with them as thanks for their help. I waited around and talked to the girl and her mom for a tiny bit longer until I felt like the coast was clear and then went on my way. Oh man, I'd just like to say thanks again for that little girl. I don't think I would've been able to escape alone!" said Felix.

"I don't know, you might have to get used to it, Felix, if you're going to be in any more chick flick movies! You'll have to find a better escape route for all those crazy teenagers wanting to marry you!" said Jimmy.

"I know, right? I need to come up with a plan because I don't think I'll be as lucky to find that little angel again to save me. Seriously, of all the people that could have helped, it was a child who saw my struggle and helped me," remarked Felix.

"Well, I hope you make it out alive again because we'll want you back on the show soon!" said Jimmy.

"I'd love to come back and thanks for having me!" said Felix.

Author's Note: I used The Ballad of Saint Felix to write this story. In the original story, it was about Saint Felix who was being chased by the soldiers who were going to kill him for being a Christian. He barely got away from the soldiers and hid in a little crevasse where a little spider formed a strong web around the opening so the soldiers would not find him. He stayed there till it was safe to leave and had the help of a woman who kept him hidden in a well until it was officially safe for him to come back into the public. In my story I chose a child instead of a spider and her mom instead of the other woman who helped him hide. Sometimes I find that reading a story about people instead of animals is easier to connect with and apply to our lives. I also decided to tell this story in a way of an interview. This way there was some comedic relief throughout the whole story. I chose The Jimmy Kimmel Show because he is really good listening to a story and making it better without really even trying. This story shows how we forget how important a child or a spider is in this world and that they can have a huge impact on a person. This impact can even save a person's life.

Week 3 Reading Diary continued: Saints and Animals

This week I decided to read the Saints and Animals unit, from The Book of Saints and Friendly Beasts by Abbie Farwell Brown, and really enjoyed reading all about these handful of saints!

The Fish Who Helped Saint Gudwall - He and his friend lived on a small deserted island in caves. When the winter came, the ocean and waves made him flee his own home. The fish heard his prayer and built a sand bar for him so he could live out the rest of his days living on the island with peace. This is a story where it is flipped and the animals are actually the ones helping the human. 

The Wolf-Mother of Saint Ailbe - I really enjoyed reading this story; I even got a little emotional when reading St. Ailbe's and his wolf-mother's reunion. It is incredible that a man can be brought up by wolves but then still be able to live a respected, sophisticated life. Of course St. Ailbe would have a deep love for his wolf family and would want to respect the ones who raised him as a child. And I love how at the end the wolves would come every day for a meal at his table. I bet that was a sight to see!

The Ballad of Saint Athractas Stags - She is a girl who loves the animals and everything of nature. When the King threatens her forest and the animals inside it she uses her hair as a harness for stags and goes to the King's palace. After seeing that he changed his mind and let the forest be in peace. I can't even imagine a girl using her long hair to lead animals. Kind of reminded me of Rapunzel in a way (the Tangled version). 

The Ballad of Saint Felix - This one is amazing because even the smallest animals/insects looked after Saint Felix. A spider formed a web to hide him from soldiers to save his life. We forget that sometimes the smallest insects can have a big impact on the world. 

The Ballad of Saint Giles and the Deer - Being best friends with a deer saved this man's life. He decided that he would sacrifice his own life so that his deer friend could live. The King, after seeing St. Giles's courage and love, saved his life for what he did for nature. What is even cooler is that the King took care of St. Giles and then after meeting him was converted into a Christian. 

Saint Francis of Assisi - He was a very poor man who loved every minute of life. He devoted his life to giving lessons of peace and caring for all those in need including animals. He was able to tame a wolf and be loved by every animal in sight. They all would gather around him and enjoyed to be in his presence. I pray that I can live my life as fully as St. Francis did when he lived.
