Week 5 Storytelling: Who Would You Choose?

"You look beautiful!" I said to my good friend, Hannah, on the day of her wedding. Here I, Emma, was again at another friend's wedding with no prospect in sight. I always have to bring Tony, my longtime best friend, to all of these weddings because I can never find someone to bring myself since I am hopelessly single. It's the same thing every time; I do the motions of being in the wedding like being in the bridal party, meet up with him afterwards since he can't be a part of that, and then get drunk together at the reception to forget how we are both ridiculously single. For those of you wondering, no, this is not the point of the story where you all go,"Oh, it's because y'all are meant for each other!" This is definitely not the case, I promise.

In the tradition of drinking and dancing too much at weddings, I run into this good-looking man named Samuel. Supposedly, he is one of the groom's friends from college and we dance and talk for quite a while at the reception. We talk over the next couple of days, get along pretty well, and he's going to take me out to dinner sometime next week, which I'm actually pretty nervous about!

To make life even more hilarious, I was antique shopping today looking for a set of shelves for my bedroom when I bumped into this very attractive man that was looking for a new desk for his apartment. I learned his name was Greg and he helped me look for shelves while I helped him look for a desk. We went to lunch afterwards and talked for hours. It was an instant connection and I would very much like to see him again as well.

How is it that a week ago I had no prospects and today I have two? I'm just going to see where each relationship goes over the next week or so. For months, I was talking to both Samuel and Greg, meeting up with them for dinners, and becoming more and more confused about who I wanted to keep around.

During this time is also when I realized that I was becoming more tired and losing my appetite. In the beginning I thought it was because I was stressing out too much and worrying about who I was going to choose, but Tony actually made me go to the doctor and I'm thankful that he did. It turns out I have leukemia. When I got back I immediately told both Samuel and Greg of one, my condition, and two, of each other.

What I really don't deserve is for both of them to continue to care for me and want to fight to be with me. They both had fallen for me and wanted to be with me forever. They are both fantastic, wonderful, and the most amazing men in the world and how could they both want me? So here I am, stuck in this hospital for months trying to get better.

Samuel will drop by the hospital to visit me pretty often. He is the best and has made it his responsibility and his goal to spread awareness of my disease. He started an organization to raise money for leukemia. He spends all of his time and efforts being charitable and reaching out to people all over the city. I am so thankful to have someone that cares so much for me that he is doing everything he can to save others like me. I really do love him!

Greg also visits me quite often, but he is also a busy businessman. I asked my doctor about the medical bills today to see when they were due. He looked at me with a smile and said to me that they were already taken care of and I didn't need to worry about it. Turns out that Greg has been paying my medical bills this entire time! I am truly so thankful for him and can't imagine my life without him. I love him and all that he has done for me!

My best friend from the beginning, Tony, actually, has been the one to stay by my side throughout this whole sickness. He was the one who sent me to the doctor, sat with me in my appointment, and really hasn't left my side ever since. He leaves when he needs to but comes back as soon as possible. We often fall asleep watching movies together every night and I now realize how much he means to me. He makes me laugh and feel better when the doctor comes in with bad news, he lets me cry on his shoulder, and he is the one that understands the pain I have been going through all this time. As I look at him now sleeping in the chair next to my hospital bed, I realize that I have loved him this entire time without knowing it. I think he has realized it too because normally he would go do his own thing by now. Sometimes the hardest times in life make you think about if you have a future, what you will do with it.

So, if the doctor comes in and tells me that I am cured and I have the rest of my life to live, who do I spend it with? Do I spend it with my long time best friend who I have been with through thick and thin? Do I spend it with the gentleman who loves me enough to change his life and spend it raising awareness about my disease? Or do I spend it with the man who took responsibility for me out of love and has made it his goal to make sure that I have a life full of life without debt?

Who would you choose?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Author's Note: This story is inspired by the riddle of The Three Lovers in the Twenty-Two Goblins Unit. In the original story, a goblin riddles a king with a story about a beautiful girl that is being pursued by three suitors. The girl ends up dying and being cremated. The first suitor lives on her ashes and becomes a beggar just to be with her ashes. The second suitor takes her bones and dips them into the sacred Ganges River. The third suitor becomes a monk and wanders until he finds a spell book that would bring her back to life. He returns and brings the girl back to life in her full beauty. The goblin then asks the king who the girl should pick as her husband. The king, being a wise man, tells him that the first suitor who stayed with her ashes should be the one to have her for he acted as a husband would, when the other two acted as if a father or a brother would. The king guesses right and the rest of the unit continues. In my story, I decided to make it more modern with a confusing love story. Tony represents the first suitor, Samuel represents the second suitor, and Greg represents the third suitor. In the end, though, I decided to leave it as an open question for you to answer yourself, who you would choose. I also chose to write it in a way where we are in Emma's mind as the couple of months paths so we can see her own heart change in the process.
  1. Wow this a powerful story! I thought it was going to be a really happy story throughout until the whole leukemia, that was definitely a buzz kill. That is awesome that Greg was paying the medical bills. I really like this story because it is realistic and I think a lot of people deal with being single and then all of a sudden they have two people coming after them at once, and then there are people who have experienced leukemia or have dealt with family members with leukemia. This was your typical love story but a lot better than your typical love story in my opinion with all that was going on on the side. Great pictures as well! The one with the hospital bed was very powerful.
  2. This story was absolutely fantastic! I loved loved loved it!!! The beginning started off as light and humorous since Emma was joking about her pathetic single life. Then when she met Greg and Samuel, I felt like she was on the bachelorette and going on different one on ones with two different guys! Your twist in the middle of the story, the diagnosis of leukemia, was so powerful and moving. The mood of the story completely changed and became serious. I loved how dynamic and changing your story was. It was so heartwarming at the end that she realized that she truly loved Tony. I wonder who she would pick to spend the rest of her life with if the doctos tell her that she is cured! I love the use of pictures in your story! The last one fit so perfectly because it vividly paints a picture of what must be going on in Emma's mind! Great job! This was so awesome to read, I really enjoyed it!
  3. Hey Claire! Your story is such a unique twist on the original tale. I haven’t read anyone else’s that has ended with a question posed to the readers. I may have to use that next time! I think that you did a good job introducing all of the characters and giving them their own personalities. I personally, think that the leukemia was a great way to add some drama to the story. I think that you also did a good job of showing how each man handled Emma’s sickness. I do think that you could have added a little bit about how Emma felt about being diagnosed with leukemia, just to add a bit more authenticity to the tale. However, the word count can sometimes make giving details difficult. I don’t know what man Emma would end up with in the end, but I think it would be a tie between Tony or Greg. While Samuel did a good job of promoting her disease, he didn’t seem to care about her life directly as much as the other two did. And who doesn’t love a best friends falling in love story!
  4. Hello Claire! Great story! I really like how you included multiple images as the story progressed. It was great that you added those details so the readers can visualize better the story as they read along. I liked your blurb from the beginning which attracted me to read this story. I thought it was really interesting that the reader was suppose to choose who she would end up with. As for me, I am a sucker for the girl ending up with her best friend that she never expected to end up with. Since they were always there for each other, they know way more about each other than the other two guys. However, the other guys are also very hard to say no too. They may be really amazing once she gets to know them more. You did a really great job at creating three perfect candidates and making it difficult for the reader to choose.
  5. This story was very interesting and fun to read! It's definitely a difficult decision and Emma's a lucky girl. I think I would go with Tony in the end though. I mean, they have been best friends for a long time, meaning he knows her the longest. He's also always there with her. I know you mentioned in the story that Greg is a busy businessman, but he must drop by after work or something right. And although Sam is also nice, I think I would still go with Tony. I'm a sucker for stories with best friends and always root for them to get together in the end. You did a really good job making it such a hard decision for not only the character to make, but the reader as well. I like that you ended your story with an open ended question, provoking your readers to genuinely think about the choices.
  6. Hi Claire! It is nice to meet you. Great story! I really like this story. It is so interesting to read. I really like how you ended your story with a question and I think that would make it more enjoyable to read because the reader can be able choose the ending he or she prefer for the story and that question can also make everyone read your story happy with the ending. You choice of the characters in the story was wonderful. Each character was different that the others and has something different to make the reader and Emma to confuse about which one to choose. Choosing the Leukemia ass Emma’s disease made a great twist to the story and add some drama to make the story more powerful. I do not know what man Emma would end up with, but in my opinion I think she should choose Tony because he is her best friend and they know everything about each other. And in the beginning she did not realize that she loves him and the end she realized her love to him and that she loves him while there were two men in her life. So I think she would prefer Tony.
  7. Claire,
    Another great story addition to your portfolio! Great job so far I must say; these first two stories have definitely grabbed my attention. The format you used in your first story was great and the ending to this second story was the best. I love how you ended it with a question which almost always appeals to the reader! Leaving them with a question allows for the reader to also use their own creativity. Using cancer with Emma was a great detail that added a lot more depth and power to the overall story also. Keep up the good work, I cant wait to read your future stories!
  8. I am glad that somebody else also chose to read 22 Goblins. I chose this story to read as well, back when we had this unit. I also like that you made up your own riddle, while still staying true to the original theme of the story. Unlike the original, you never give an answer to the story. This makes your story more powerful, because the reader is left to make up their own choice, and all of the choices are correct. Read life is often like this too, one choice might be right for one person, and completely wrong for another. There is often no cut and dry answer. I suspect from reading the original that the best friend is the correct choice, because he is always by her side and is there for her, like a husband would be.
    I do really like your story, and I think you did a good job of creating a modern 22 Goblins riddle.
  9. Hey Claire, I chose to comment on this story because the title, “Who Would You Choose?” made me feel like this story would be full of interesting twists and turns! Below, you’ll find my comments as they correlate with your story.
    I always have to bring Tony, my longtime best friend, to all of these weddings because I can never find someone to bring myself since I am hopelessly single.
    ~~~ sounds too familiar at this age. When in reality, it’s just not the right time! I feel you, Emma!

    For those of you wondering, no, this is not the point of the story where you all go,"Oh, it's because y'all are meant for each other!" This is definitely not the case, I promise.
    ~~~ Lol, that’s what I was thinking was going to come next! Darn!
    Hmm, okay, Sam seems pretty cool… they did meet at the reception, though, with a lot of drinking going on. So MAYBE a little bit of that interaction was the Champaign talking.
    Greg, now I like Greg! They met naturally with no other variables involved and he took her out to lunch afterwards, meaning he must have felt that instant chemistry as well… I like that. That sounds promising.
    (Just a small suggestion for the paragraph that comes right after the picture of the antique shop. I would just break that paragraph up into two parts, right after you say, “see where each relationship goes over the next week or so,” so that the reader can see the hop in time in the story. The first part is talking about the begging of the relationships, while the second have is talking about months down the line.)
    Dang, Sam and Greg! Way to step up and help Emma out!
    I KNOW TONY WOULD COME BACK INTO THE PICTURE! That makes me happy! Although that’s awesome Sam and Greg have pitched in. I think I would have to go for Tony that was there throughout the entire thing and knows her like the back of his hand, since they’ve known one another for so long. Long live Tony and Emma. They can go by EmOny. Or maybe TEmma. (:
    GREAT STORY!
  10. Hey Claire! Wow I really enjoyed reading your story called Who Would You Choose? My mom always tells me that a boy will come around when you least expect it which is what happens in your story… all at once Emma has 3 guys to choose from! I love how you put a modern twist on the story. It was also cool how you left the ending with an open ended question. Secretly I hope she chooses to be with Tony!
